Libreoffice always worked better than Openoffice for me. I like OnlyOffice for openoffice compatibility but I don't know if its Mac only or not. Its a bit more polished feeling in some ways I think.

Affinity is very nice and is a one time purchase. Apple pages has a layout mode though its more limited of course. Ive seen people do some decently impressive stuff still.

A friend of mine has something he calls "core + 1" which is basically you get the core rulebook and 1 other book that is worth having, but don't buy anything beyond that. Mostly to curb buying crap he ends up regretting.
