The characters:
Barnum the hardholder. Leader of Barnum Brothers, the hardhold (he kicked his brother out many years ago but kept the name). A big, bear-like man who takes the lead simply because someone has to. His gang does what he tells them but he kinda has to tell them everything, y'know?
Jones the brainer. She ran away from the maelstrom-related accident where she killed her sister and lives under the cover of being a doctor. She has a mobile house moving between Barnum Brothers and Lulu's holding a day's march away, often keeping her helper Crin where she's not staying at the moment. She also loves secrets (they're yummy) so she takes the chances she gets to deep brain scan her patients.
Mar the battlebabe. An ice-cold young man who simply walked away when his parents died from the harsh climate. Weilding a big-ass rifle he swiped from Barnum, he hunts big game and humans (when paid of course) in the forests.
The holding: Barnum Brothers is just a small village by the road in the forest, half-way between the river and the old coal mine. It's a cold world, so the biggest issues are getting enough wood and coal for the winter - farming for the food you need isn't that hard in comparison. Everyone pretty much sleeps in a pile to save heat. The holding's specialty is metalwork, since the forge/workshop-type building where Barnum's whole gang lives and works is the only place around here that actually works metal.
We start off with Barnum waking up by the cold Corbet snuggling up to him, shaking and coughing. Twice, the cook, is missing again so the fire's died and breakfast isn't ready. He concludes that you have to do everything yourself and starts chopping wood for the fire. Princy, his right-hand girl, wakes and starts helping. She's one of the few people who can actually take an initiative around here. She goes to find Jones to see what she can do for Corbet. Barnum wakes up Jackabacka, Weasel and Sundown to go looking for Twice, who was last seen walking into the forest yesterday.
They go outside to find Mar sitting by a fire, roasting a hare for dinner. They sit down and talk to him, asking about Twice. Barnum zones out a bit to open his brain, and learns that Twice is naked and cold somewhere out in the forest, in the direction of the coal mine. While Barnum's not watching, Mar threatens to break Jackabacka's jaw if he doesn't shut up.
Prnicy wakes Jones by knocking on her door, and tells her about Corbet. Princy has the hots for Jones and it shows, and Jones would love to dig into Princy's brain, but she doesn't dare risk breaking Barnum's right-hand girl. They go pcik up Corbet and tuck him in at Jones' place. Jones tells Princy to leave and opens her brain. I failed the roll, so instead of learning anything about Corbet's condition Jones gets flashbacks from the time her sister Marie died, when they both eplored the maelstrom as kids. Crin wakes her and she decides to take a walk to clear her thoughts.
She goes outside and joins teh expedition to find Twice, consisting of Barnum, Sundown, Jackabacka and weasel with the addition of Mar who gets a bottle of booze for the trouble. They set out on the forest trail and Mar starts asking questions about what actually happened to Twice. Everyone knows he's been a bit off for a year or so, but no-one knows why. Firing from the hip, Mar asks Jones if she had anything to do with it and spots the lie with a Read a Person roll. Jones took care of em some time ago, found him interesting, but then e broke.
Jones keeps denying this and is in a way saved by the bell as Sundown, who'd been scouting ahead, comes dashing down the trail chased by a giant monster of a bear. The party flees into the thicker forest upp a hill, and buys itself some time as the bear is to big to weave through the bramble. Barnum watches Weasel fall behind, and opens fire at the bear to draw his attention. He lands a shotgun shell into its head, and it takes off. Meanwhile, Jones had hidden in some sort of cavern to open her brain, but I failed so she got more flashbacks and emerged disoriented from another cavern, behind the bear.
After ducking away from the fleeing bear, Jones is reunited with the party where remaining ammo is counted. After a quick meal they continue ahead, and it's not very far until they find Twice dead on the ground, naked with eir genitalia cut off. Mar promises Barnum that he will hunt down the one who did this and kill him. Jones tries to examine the scene of the crime, but fails her Read a Sitch roll.
