Green Apocalypse World, with horses and parasite colds!
I got to try Apocalyps World by +Vincent Baker for the fist time tonight. I tried a really brief session of Moster Hearts at one of Wilhelm Person (wilper) potluck cons, Monster Hearts rocked, and because all the buzz about AW my expectation was set very high.
It was awesome. Joel Nordström (gnomvid) ran the game, and Malin Forsberg (korpa) , Linn and I played. We going to play a "real" campaign of AW in the autumn, but decided to try the system in a mini campaign first.
We made a green Apocalypse World, where the forest and nature had broken down civilization during our parents generation. Now human lived as nomads, always on the move, because if you stayed to long nature became hostile.
Malin played The Chopper, Goldy, and what really set the tone of the gang was that the chopper gang rode horses and called them self the Horde.
The Horde had be hired to protect The Jones family as the ventured cross the land to find a new safe place. The Jones family was a extended family/tribe of about 200 people, lead by Granny Jones. An ancient matriarch.
I played the Brainer, Sundown Jones, a grandchild to Granny Jones. Sundown was an awkward teenager and bit outcast because of her/his powers , but very loyal to Granny. He/she was useful to the Jones family, butt no one but granny touched Sundown willingly.
Linn played the Angel, "Dr T", a doctor the Jones Family found two years ago alone in the woods. She was silent about her background, but dedicated to finish her masters work to find a cure for the Parasite Cold.
The Parasite Cold was an AIDS like disease, submitted by body fluids, or by skin contact.
The Horde had a debt to some slavers. Goldys second in command, Pinky longed to take over the Horde, and was going to stab Goldy in the back at the first possible occasion.
One member of the Jones Family had a case of the Parasite Cold, which Dr T kept hidden, because she was only one ingredient short of being able to make a cure. And because the patient would be killed if anyone knew he carried the virus. As long as her patient followed her advice and didn't touch anyone, it was worth the risk to keep him alive....
The story kicked off when the caravan reached a pass in the mountains held by the slavers, and at the same time it became clear that Dr T patient had passed on the virus to his pregnant wife.
Then... Everything became awesome.
At the end of this session, Sundown was shot in the stomach, and fell into unconsciousness after infecting the slavers with the parasite. Goldy killed her second in the command, but discovered to late that she been drugged en fell unconscious. Dr T, who ordered to have Goldy drugged was just about to venture out into the very dangerous forest to find the last ingredient for the cure.
Win and Awesome. We going to run one more session to see how things go, and then we will start our "real" AW campaign.
