"What's a Chaosium monograph you ask? It's a swell way for us to try out new ideas, settings, and writers without risking many thousands of dollars on a traditional print run. These photocopied booklets do cost us more to print per individual book. Since however we are printing only a handful at a time, we don't spend too much money on inventory. We print only what we can quickly sell. All of this is a very long way of saying they are experimental booklets we can afford to print by the dozen. We can bring you new material for our game lines more often. Perhaps more importantly, it allows us to play with settings and ideas we'd never publish otherwise for fear of losing our shirts.
These monographs are certainly gems in the rough. They are not fully polished works, and are not for everyone or general distribution. The editing is brief, the artwork is supplied by the authors (or their friends, or random volunteers) the layouts are often done in a word processing program, and the covers are all black and white. Because these booklets are so rough, we don't sell them to distributors or retailers. You can only get them here at Chaosium.com, or at a Chaosium convention booth.
Finally, monographs provide us with a modest shot in the economic arm. This of course helps us in turn to print our traditional books more often. For those of you keeping score at home, we've published three traditional RPG supplements in the last 4 months, and have another at the printer right now. It's been a long, long time since we were able to that. Monograph sales are a small, but important, part of that success. Rather than delaying the publication of traditional books, monographs have helped us print more of them.
Some of our previously published monographs have done so well that we're now convinced they should be published in a traditional format. That may give us some 2007 releases!"
Saxat ifrån Chaosiums hemsida. Låter som ett rätt intressant grepp, men det kräver förstås en viss sorts fans för att fungera och där ligger nog CoC bra till.
