Nightowl
Champion
The advert I usually use for games at cons begins "It was a time of myth
and legends... known as the twentieth century... mankind called out for
a champion... she was Diana, Warrior Princess!"
Think of our world dramatised by someone a few thousand years in the
future who has the same respect for history, geography, and plausibility
we see in such historical dramas as "Robin, Prince of Thieves," "Xena,
Warrior Princess," and "The Wild Wild West," with various figures from
around this period (give or take a few hundred years) around at the same
time. Britain is ruled by Queen Elizabeth, whose son is Bonny Prince
Charlie. The neighbouring kingdoms include England (ruled by Queen
Victoria and Prince Albert Einstein) and Scotland (ruled by Mary, Queen
of Scots). The world's leading physician is Joe Louis Pasteur, while
America is run by Emperor Norton, with rival kingdoms run by the
military dictator Uncle Sam and religious leader King Martin Luthor.
Nell Armstrong piloted the first mission to the moon, but the rescue
mission flew in Stevenson's Rocket. There are Indians on the warpath in
America, mostly Sikhs.
Principal characters include charismatic princess Diana who uses the
Mystic Power of Royalty to fight the evil war-god Landmines, loyal
sidekick Fergie, barbarian hero Red Ken, riverboat gambler Wild Bill
Gates, and so on. Lots of very bad jokes, some good (I hope) points
about how history gets mucked about by entertainment, and the inevitable
disclaimers, e.g. "No rabid coypu were harmed in the making of the
episode; however, large quantities of grapes were accidentally
squashed."
The game system is VERY cinematic, involving vast quantities of 6-sided
dice and rules which reward implausibly complex actions; it's pretty
simple and I want to encourage people to buy the game so I'm not going
to give all the details.
Above all else, it's moderately cheap; $14.95 or 9.95 pounds. It may
already be available from Amazon etc., and full details are on the
