Skapade Samuray huset *ler* och de är coola..
House Mirumoto
This file came about when one of my players noticed a major omission from the minor houses chapter of "Lords
of the Known World". Approaching his GM in the approved fashion (kow-tow) he asked me: "Honoured
GM-san. Where are the space samurai?". This omission, when pointed out, struck me hard! Yes, House
Li-Halan are supposed to be oriental, but I see them as more Confucian Chinese than Japanese in their
emphasis on social order and harmony. The only thing for it was to grab every Japanese cliche going and do a
"Lords of the Known World"-style write up on a new minor house. A house of little yellow maniacs with extremely sharp
swords and a fixation on imagist poetry who grunt "No touch my sword!" or "Build railway!" at the least provocation: House
Mirumoto.
History of the House
The first appearance of the name Mirumoto in the annals of the Known World is in the 2700s, where a Mirumoto Tako as a
staffer for the Tanaka family of Kish. The influence of this family of Japanese origins appears to have grown over time as the
incidence of the name Mirumoto in official documentation gradually rises over time. When the Tanaka family were absorbed by
House Li-Halan some of the divested Tanaka properties were granted to the Mirumoto in return for past and future political
support. To this day Mirumoto support for the Li-Halan has been unwavering.
During the Republic and into the New Dark Ages the Mirumoto appear to have fulfilled their duties to the Li-Halan in exemplary
fashion, but to otherwise have kept their crazed overlords at arm's length. They managed this through a combination of wilyness,
deception and carefully polite use of language which is an integral part of the house culture. Whenever the Li-Halan demanded
something the Mirumoto would smile and explain why this or that demand was impossible at the present time, but that they
would bear their master's wishes in mind in the future.
The Mirumoto were amongst the first to congratulate Cardano on his conversion, but, having already accepted the Universal
Church as a social control mechanism during the Divestiture, they remained largely unaffected by the radical change in Li-Halan
policy. Strong and early supporters of Vladimir Alecto's bid to establish himself as Emperor in the 4500s the Mirumoto were,
for a time, one the verge of becoming a major power in the Known Worlds. With the death of Vladimir and the desolation of
their allies in Houses Justinian and Alecto however, the Mirumoto were eventually relegated to the status of a very minor house.
Many Mirumoto see the enthronement of a new emperor, in the person of Alexius, as a sign that their star is once again in the
ascendent. Whether there is any truth to this remains to be seen.
House Culture and Ways
The keynote words of House Mirumoto are 'duty', 'harmony' and 'tradition'. Outsiders are sometimes taken aback by the rigour
with which these concepts are followed. Stories abound about Mirumoto samurai (knights) marching for days without food
simply because to waste time eating while their lord required them would be a dereliction of duty. This rigour extends down
from the house and pervades the freeman and serf classes below them (these social orders are still known among Mirumoto's
by the ancient terms heimin and hinin).
Everything in a Mirumoto holding is a triumph of minimalism and the ethos of austerity that the house promotes. Clothing within
the house usually echoes the styles of medieval Japan, with hakima, haori and kimono worn by the higher orders. The
Mirumoto obsession with orderliness extends beyond the personal and even natural surroundings of their homes are
well-tended, orderly and harmonious (it is doubtless someone's duty to see that this is the case). This austerity is coupled with a
respect for station and, even when amongst themselves, no member of the house is entitled to speak before their social
superiors have had their say. Likewise no business may be transacted between partners without the correct forms of hospitality
and good manners being observed.
The Mirumoto were rather late converts to the Universal Church, but, once they were able to reconcile Zebulon's revelations
with their pre-existing religious beliefs on harmony and peace they became solid converts. According to House Mirumoto
apologists:
"The Creator has put people in their ordained place and it is one's duty to perform to the best of one's ability in
that place. Where nature is deficient in providing for the needs of the people it is the duty of the lord to make up
the shortfall."
Needless to say the Mirumoto greatly favour both the Orthodoxy and the Amaltheans for the great age and emphases on order
and peace held by both these sects of the church. The Brother Battle are respected for their self-discipline, the Eskatonics are
considered godless wizards and Avestites, although treated with all politeness, are feared as unruly fanatics. Churches in
Mirumoto lands are regularly packed as, to quote Bishop Mirumoto Tokatsu: "...public veneration of the Creator is the duty
of all enlightened men."
Holdings House Mirumoto's patrimony are the Islands of Harmony, a sub-tropical archipeligo off the coast of one of the major
continents of Icon. Heavily populated and mountainous these islands were chosen by the founders of the
house for their resemblence to the Mirumoto's ancestral home on earth. Several millenia of land-scaping
have made this resemblence even more striking. The Mirumoto are famous for the manner in which they
combine the natural world with man-made artefacts within a small space. Perhaps the epitome of this art
are the blossom gardens of Shiro Mirumoto (the family palace) where blooms from a score of worlds
flower throughout the year.
The family have several minor holdings on other Li-Halan worlds, on the Hazat world of Vera Cruz, and of course, on the
divided world of Tethys. These holdings, in common with the Islands of Harmony, are usually small but intensively and profitably
exploited by their owners, as a failure to bring harmony (and thus efficiency) to one's holdings is seen as betrayal of one's duty.
