Patchwork Bear
Born from the twisted minds and hands of surgeons, the patchwork bear is the most macabre of sights. In my travels I have encountered a few, each unique like a horrendous malfunctioning snowflake. One can only imagine what drove their creators to such vile crafting, but alas, they are a part of our world now. And I believe it grew slightly worse because of them.
Most of the patchwork bears are owned and kept by important men and women, people who don’t shy away from any means of staying important. Lord Bolassar II had two in chains in his courtroom. (“Had”, I write, since the terrible fire which left his castle in ruins where the ashes of his ungodliness still reeks of misdeeds, among them: bears.) Cirque du Jalousie staged a most sorrowful being, sewn together from now extinct parrots, as it shedded tears and teared shreds of volunteers. In captivity, however savage they might be, they are mostly bound to the will of their masters.
Once I ran into a patchwork bear, roaming through the woods, an eye filled with all the rage injustice built up inside its crumbling body. Just a few metres apart, I could smell the dead tissue, and thought my days were counted. I had trouble controlling my, naturally, upset horse, but we were in luck, mind you. This was an old specimen, still quite deadly, but weathering before my eyes. I turned the steed and ordered him to kick the beast, a blow that ended its miserable unlife.
