Print and see how it feels on paper.

Do a preliminary layout for printing while you work with the text to get a feel for how much space the text fills. Good enough is good enough here. Then print and review on paper after having stepped away from the text for some time. Only after one or more such iterations, work on the final layout.

If you use Word, your document will look like a school assignment.
